I know what you’re thinking, microwave baked potato…isn’t baked in the name. So you would think you need to cook them in the oven. Don’t get me wrong, baked potatoes can totally be cooked in the oven, but the oven is a slow process.
I love to cook microwave baked potatoes, especially when I am in a hurry. Well technically I guess you can’t bake potatoes in the microwave, but I swear these potatoes are just like your favorite twice baked potatoes, but better.
How do you Bake Potatoes in the Microwave?
To make these easy microwave baked potatoes just wash the potatoes. Next, poke several holes in them with a fork. Then pop them into the microwave. Simple as that.
Should you poke holes in a baked potato before cooking?
Poking holes in the potato will allow the steam to release. Supposedly, this will help the potato steam and cook better. I have made potatoes both ways, and I personally do not notice a difference.

Microwave Twice Baked Potato
Ingredients
- 4 Large Potatoes
- 1 Stick Butter
- 1 Tub Sour Cream
- 1 Cup Shredded Cheese
- 1 Packet Real Bacon Bits
- 2 Tsp Salt
- 2 Tsp Pepper
Instructions
- Wash potatoes and poke with a fork several times.
- For 1 large potato I usually microwave it around 7 minutes and check to see if it is fork tender. If not done, keeping cooking at 1 minute intervals until tender. For cooking multiple potatoes, time will vary. I recommend 10 minute intervals checking in between to see if they are tender.
- Once fork tender, use a knife or fork to cut a slit down the middle and squeeze bottom to open potato up.
- Add butter, salt, pepper and sour cream (optional). Mash inside of potato until ingredients are mixed well. Top with shredded cheese and bacon bits.
- Cook in microwave another 1-2 minutes or until cheese is melted.
- Serve hot and Enjoy!
