Summer Garden

This year we were so excited to finally have the land to plant a large Summer Garden. We had been on the hunt for land, with a garden being my husband’s main priority. And the farm already had the perfect garden spot ready for us. Well minus all the hard work!

We (mostly my husband) had planted smaller gardens in our back yard in town, but we really didn’t have the space or sunlight to really get the results we wanted. At the farm, we started off small, and the garden kept getting bigger and bigger.

We started off with a few of our favorites, and then added from there. We knew we wanted sweet corn, cabbage, squash, zucchini. Oh, and of course tomatoes because I love homemade salsa. It’s a good thing we started with our favorites because we really had luck with these.

On the other hand, we also had a few flops. The cucumber plants really went wild at first, but the cucumbers seem to get lost in the rest of the plants. However, This could have been our fault with the placement.

Speaking of placement, we really had a tough time with the watermelons. These were planted at the back of the garden, but quickly started taking over, and making their way to the front.

Even with the flops, all in all, our first garden at the farm was a success. You got to have a few flops to learn along the way, right? We are currently looking forward to fall planting, and are already thinking of what our garden will look like next summer. Until then, I will be happily enjoying all my canned and frozen veggies, that we grew with our own hands.
